Nathan Hartswick has extensive experience in music, theatre and arts education, having been an accomplished arts performer, director and educator for over ten years. His original plays have been published by the largest producer of children’s drama in the U.S. Nathan co-founded Spark Arts, a performing arts studio in Burlington, VT, with his wife Natalie Miller. He pursues many creative projects in writing, music and arts education, and film and theatre direction.

Co-founded Spark Arts, a studio dedicated to offering affordable performing arts classes to children and adults; responsible for teaching classes and workshops in the space, and all other day-to-day operations.

Independent, Vermont & New York
Private instructor, 2000 – 2011

Taught private lessons in piano, trumpet and voice, and group workshops in jazz improv and theatre to students of all ages. Have taught lessons in music studios in New York (Farmingdale Music Center, Radovich & Dean Music) and many students’ homes in Vermont.

Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School, Essex VT
Assistant Director, Spring 2009

Acted as Assistant Director of Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School’s production of “Bye, Bye Birdie.” Worked one-on-one and in groups with students in 6th-8th grade on dialogue memorization, diction, music, choreography, blocking, acting, and more. Trained a student-run backstage crew and supervised the crew during performances.

Catalyst Theatre Company, Burlington VT
Artistic/Musical Director, Summer 2006

Co-directed summer production of “How to Eat Like a Child (and Other Lessons in Not Being a Grownup”) with children ages 8 – 12. Was responsible for all aspects of the production, from dialogue coaching and acting work to music and choreography – and even marketing.

Ivy League Day Camp, Smithtown NY
Theatre Instructor, Summer 2002

Developed original curriculum and taught students ages 8 – 13 all aspects of theatre arts, including basic movement, character development, voice and diction, improvisation, set and lighting design, and makeup and costume design.

Vermont Children’s Theater, Lyndonville VT

Worked closely for many years on a volunteer basis with this non-profit family organization, helping children develop speaking, acting, musical and social skills through theater arts.

Authored many published plays for children, including The Question, Death by Dessert, The Ever After, and Café Murder, a mystery/dinner theatre play that had the fastest sales for any new play in Pioneer Drama’s history. Wrote, directed, produced and performed in a dozen sketch comedy shows and three original musicals.
